Climate Action Core 3: Conserve
“Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.” — Albert Einstein
When we widen our circle of compassion, we experience greater freedom ourselves and we conserve nature at the same time…
Core #3: Conserve
In the previous blog (Climate Action Core 2), we learned how what we eat has a great effect on the health of nature as well as ourselves. By eating a diet that is compassionate towards animals, we make the world and ourselves more compassionate and conserve nature’s precious resources.
There are many ways we can conserve, and we all can do something. While every effort, no matter how small, counts, some actions can make a big difference. When we are mindful about what we eat, what we spend money on, what we invest in, and how we vote, the power of our actions multiplies.
Buckminster Fuller once stated: "I’ve often heard people say: ‘I wonder what it would feel like to be on board a spaceship,’ and the answer is very simple. What does it feel like? That’s all we have ever experienced. We are all astronauts on a little spaceship called Earth."
It’s easy to forget that our Earth is a spaceship hurtling through space at 67,000 miles per hour (Scientific American) and that the vastness of space outside our fragile atmosphere is highly inhospitable to humans and the rest of our fellow creatures and life forms.
We need to treat our Earth like the precious life-giving, life-protecting spaceship that it is. Are we ever likely to find a more beautiful and hospitable place to call home? We need to act now to conserve nature.
