Climate Action Core 2: Prevent
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” — Ben Franklin
Facing the facts and sobering lessons of Core #1 prepared us to move forward with thoughtful resolve and deliberate speed.
Core #2: Prevent
To prevent the worst effects of climate change, we need to prevent adding carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. How can we cut our net carbon footprint down to zero?
Many solutions are needed, not just one. We all have creative roles to play. To meet the United Nations’ goal of global carbon neutrality by 2050, we need to treat climate change as the massive threat that it is.
When the Allies faced the Axis war machine during World War II, people contributed in many effective ways. This brief clip from It’s a Wonderful Life (click on underlined link) shows a few examples. Millions of Americans planted Victory Gardens.
People in the 20th century understood the grave threat they faced and responded with urgent determination. We the people of the 21st century need to understand the grave threat of climate change and respond with all hands on deck.
Paying attention to what we eat is one important way we can cut our carbon footprint. Some foods are healthy for the human body; some are harmful. Likewise, some foods can be grown in a healthy way for nature’s balance; some foods harm nature’s balance. By thoughtfully choosing what we eat, we cut our carbon footprint and help the earth’s ecosystem continue in a sustainable way for future generations.
